“Style is the answer to everything. A fresh way to approach a dull or dangerous thing. To do a dull thing with style is preferable to doing a dangerous thing without it. To do a dangerous thing with style is what I call art. Bullfighting can be an art. Boxing can be an art. Loving can be an art. Opening a can of sardines can be an art." - Charles Bukowski
I went through a period of resisting stylish clothing. I basically lived in a wardrobe of (often ill-fitting) jeans and t-shirts. I thought that this understated uniform made me a more legitimate student. A better environmentalist. A more genuine activist.
But along the way, I realized that the way we present ourselves to the world doesn’t detract from the work we create; it enhances it.
Style is the language with which we express ourselves aesthetically. And it isn’t restricted to the clothing that we wear; style infuses everything we do.
It’s in the extra flourish we add to our signature. The flavours we use to season our food. The signature hue we buy every accessory in, from headphones to Filofax.
And you can’t avoid making some sort of style statement.
So you have to decide, would you rather fade into the background or boldly express exactly who you are? Do you want to show the world a washed out version of yourself or intentionally create yourself in any image you choose?
Choose to live out loud. Choose to do it with style.
