Last week my friend Emily tweeted that she wanted to get herself a present to celebrate how excellent she is, but that she couldn't afford to. Celebrating yourself is at the very heart of self-love and I loved the sentiment of what she was saying. Buying yourself a gift just because is a really wonderful thing to do.
But I'm sure we all know what it feels like to be strapped for cash or just scraping by. During these times it can feel harder to practice self-love because we get caught up in the ideal that we need to be buying ourselves a new lipstick or flying to Tahiti for a retreat to love ourselves. But just like investing in yourself doesn't have to cost a penny, neither does practicing self-love.
Emily decided she'd celebrate with a delicious, nourishing smoothie instead. And in honour of her gumption and excellence, I decided to put together this list of totally free, completely magical acts of self-love.
It's easy to get overwhelmed by the self-help books, healthy foods, and body confident clothing we think we need to buy. But when our bank accounts are dwindling, here are 25 ways to show yourself some loving kindness and support your own personal growth.
+ Dance wildly around your bedroom. Shake off all the negative energy and self-doubt you’re carrying around today.
+ Pull a random tarot card and journal about how its meaning relates to your life. If you don't have a tarot deck, use this website.
+ Brew yourself a giant mug of tea and sit quietly while you drink it. If you don't have any tea in the cupboard, why not send away for a free sample?
+ Read from your favourite book.
+ Look at inspiring quotes on Pinterest and print one out for your wall.
+ Take stock of everything in your fridge and pantry, do some creative Googling, and then make yourself something delicious.
+ Go for a walk. Be mindful of everything you see as if you're seeing it for the first time.
+ Spend 20 minutes doing yoga or getting sweaty with the guidance of a YouTube video.
+ Reflect on your goals and what you can do next to be closer to attaining them.
+ Go to the library and wander through the self-help section. Run your hands along the shelves and pull out one you feel drawn to. Check it out.
+ Put on your puffiest skirt and twirl around.
+ Remind yourself: it’s okay to feel however you feel in this moment. You don’t need to change a thing.
+ Think of little rituals that will add magic to the mundane things you do everyday. Maybe it’s lighting a candle before you sit down to write or putting on power ballads while you clean the house.
+ Write a gratitude list.
+ Tidy your space. Unsubscribe from any newsletters or email lists you don’t like or even read. Try Regina’s Creative Cleanse. Clearing your physical and digital space will help clear your mind.
+ Write a love letter to your body. To younger you. To your future self. To whatever part of you is struggling today.
+ Phone someone you miss and have an amazing conversation. Don’t be afraid to get deep.
+ Watch an inspiring film (if you don’t have anything on hand, check out this list of free sites that stream movies legally).
+ Pull out any craft supplies you have lying around whether it’s old magazines and glue, paint, crayons, or just a bunch of pens. Spend some time getting creative. Doodle for an hour. Make a craft. Create something beautiful.
+ Give yourself permission to do nothing – for an hour, an afternoon, or an entire day. Lie on the couch, sit in the park, or hang out with friends – just make sure you forget about your to-do list and relax.
+ Take a bath.
+ Create a morning routine that helps you feel happy and fulfilled.
+ Write down your favourite poem and keep it in your diary.
+ Ask for help with that thing you’re struggling with. You don’t need to figure it out alone.
I'd love to know: what would you add to this list? And what are you going to do to show yourself some love today?
