Our Spring Bookshelf

Seasonal and cyclic living are so important to me so when I've seen that other families have seasonal book collections that they rotate throughout the year, I knew this was a tradition I wanted to start for our family. Getting out our Christmas books was such a special treat each December and I love that we'll get a little bit of that magic every few months.I used Easter as an excuse to start Peter's collection of spring books and I thought I'd share them with you today.

When Spring Comes by Kevin Henkes
This is a sweet, simple board book about all of the magical things that happen in springtime. It's Peter's favourite so far because of the kitten pictures (he gives them kisses) and the thick pages means that he can turn them himself, which he loves.

The Root Children by Sibylle von Olfers
This book is a bit long and technically meant for older children but Peter has happily sat through listening to it a few times. It tells the story of the root children being woken up by Mama Earth in springtime, making their beautiful flower dresses, and living throughout the seasons of the year. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and it's such a sweet, magical way to think about the turning of the wheel.

Rabbit's Spring Adventure by Anita Loughrey
Rabbit sets out to find out what spring is all about. He gets a bit lost and on his way home he learns about all sorts of lovely things that happen in spring. I love the beautiful, colourful illustrations in this book. It's part of a series of seasonal animal stories and ends with a list of facts about that season and seasonal activities you can do with children. I'll definitely be adding the other three books to our shelf, too.

Spring Story (Brambly Hedge) by Jill Barklem
Another book meant for slightly older children and another that's part of a seasonal series. This book isn't so much a story about spring as one that takes place in spring, but it's charming nonetheless. The mice that live in Brambly Hedge throw a birthday picnic for William. The illustrations are so sweet and it's one I know I would have been delighted by when I was young, so I can definitely see it becoming a favourite of Peter's as he grows up.
