Peter's Favourite Books, Aged 11 Months
Peter wants to be read to almost constantly these days. He brings books over to us, pushing them insistently onto our laps. The same ones over and over. As soon as it’s finished we have to start over. It can be utterly sweet and completely boring in equal measures.He definitely has firm favourites already. The ones he brings to us most often. That delight him entirely. That he wants ready five, ten, fifteen times in a row.I thought I’d share them with you in case you have a child this age or a little one approaching their first birthday to buy a gift for as I think books are always appreciated.
Whose Baby Am I?
This was a charity shop find and one of Peter’s first favourites. It’s a sweet, simple book showing babies with their mamas.
Baby Loves Peekaboo
Peter was given this for Christmas when he was 6 months old and it was a big hit right away. It used to make him laugh and laugh. It’s a lift-the-flap board book and now he can turn the pages and uncover the surprises himself, which he loves.
Each Peach Pear Plum
Matthew and I both know this one off by heart as we’ve read it so many times. The rhythmic words and detailed illustrations really capture his attention so we often spend a lot of time looking at it.
Global Babies
A simple book with a sweet message showing photos of babies from around the world. Peter loves looking at each of their faces and I think it’s a nice way to introduce a little bit of diversity into our storytelling. It’s also sweet that he gets to see how other mamas carry their babies in slings in different countries. Plus the proceeds from the book support an international children’s charity.
Dinosaurs
A simple touch and feel book that Peter loves to look at, stopping to explore all of the colours and textures.
Out and About
This is my favourite so I’m glad that it delights Peter so much as well. They’re simple poems about the seasons that really capture the magic of childhood. Shirley Hughes’s illustrations are so beautiful and we can spend a lot of time talking about what we see in each one.
Where is Jessie?
This is another lift the flap book that we bought from our Sing and Sign class. It’s a good way to practice a few of our signs and since it’s a story about a little cat, Peter loves it. He squeals with delight and points when we lift up a page to reveal Jessie underneath.
Good Night, Toronto
Peter was given this book for Christmas and has recently started to want to read it over and over again. It’s part of a lovely series of location-specific good night books. It makes me really happy that he loves this one as next time we go back to Toronto he’ll already have a relationship with many of its landmarks.Since starting this post we’ve picked up two new books that Peter has really taken to.
Handa’s Surprise
We found this in a charity shop and I bought it as I’d enjoyed reading it to the little boy I used to nanny. A girl puts together a present for her friend but some mischievous animals interfere and create a surprise for them. He brings us this to read first thing every morning and he's often shoving it at Matthew before he even gets his shoes off when he comes home from work.
A Busy Day for Birds
This one is so much fun to read as it’s full of bird sounds and really rhythmical language. It would also be great to incorporate actions and movements to with a slightly older child.Do you have any favourite books for one-year olds? I always love adding to our collection!
